Whether you are an experienced vaper or just getting started, you don’t need us to tell you that there is a huge variety of juices, parts and accessories in the vaping world! Without a doubt, the most varied product on the vaping market is the juice (e-liquid).
You have endless options. Hundreds (if not thousands) of flavours, strengths and levels of nicotine content. You also come across different blends, such as 50-50 or 70-30 vape juice - But what does it all mean? In this article we aim to explain:
- What e-liquid is
- E-liquid ingredients
- What is meant by 50/50 e-liquid
- Where to find e-liquid
What is e-liquid?
E-liquid (sometimes known as ‘juice’, ‘vape juice’ or e-juice’) is the liquid found within the atomiser (tank). The liquid is heated up with the help of a coil, which is also situated within the atomiser. The liquid reaches a heat where it turns to vapour, which you can then inhale through the mouthpiece of the vape. Vaping e-liquid is considered safe, so long as your liquids have gone through the proper safety checks and you are buying them from a reputable supplier, such as JM Wholesale.
What are the ingredients within e-liquid?
You might be wondering what e-liquid consists of. Especially as you are about to put it into your body! The good news is, vape juice is safe and legal.
Vape juice is made up of four ingredients:
- Vegetable Glycerin (VG)
- Propylene Glycol (PG)
- Flavouring
- Nicotine (optional)
When we talk about the ratios (50/50, 70/30, 80/20 etc), we refer to the amount of PG and VG. So, 50/50 e-liquid refers to the equal balance of two of these ingredients - Vegetable Glycerin (VG) and Propylene Glycol (PG). It’s that simple. But what are PG and VG and why do the ratios matter?
What Are PG & VG?
PG stands for propylene glycol. It is an organic compound derived from vegetable oils that takes the shape of a colourless, thick liquid. It has a sweet taste and is used widely within the food industry. Its purpose within e-liquids is to add thickness and act as a base oil.
VG stands for vegetable glycerin. Much like PG it is odourless with a sweet flavour and no colour. It has a thicker consistency and also acts as a base. Both ingredients are considered safe and are widely used in other products that you consume. The way they interact with one another and with your vape kit is what really matters.
Why Do E-Liquids Contain Different Amounts of PG & VG?
You’ll have noticed that different e-liquids offer different ratios of PG and VG. The levels of PG and VG in vape liquid affects the general vaping experience. For example, VG is much thicker and sweeter and tends to produce bigger clouds when you increase the ratio of VG in the juice. PG is thinner and will hit the back of your throat more abruptly, which some people prefer. Basically, you can experiment with the PG/VG levels and decide on your preference.
What to Expect with a Higher PG (60%+)
We recommend that if you have a kit or tank with coils at higher resistances (anything above 1 ohm), you choose a vape juice with slightly more PG content. That’s because high resistance coil kits are better designed for mouth to lung vaping, rather than direct to lung vaping. You can expect the combination of the higher PG level and higher resistance coil to produce more subtle clouds and a satisfying throat hit.
What to expect with a higher VG (60%+)
If you have a low resistance tank below 1 ohm, you might practise direct lung vaping, and so want to look for a VG of above 60% to make this a more enjoyable experience with a smoother throat hit. You can expect thicker clouds, a strong flavour and no throat hit.
50PG/50VG
Unsurprisingly, when we talk about a 50-50 e juice, we refer to the VG and PG being equal. This balanced approach to vaping means you can expect clouds, some throat hit and a nice, strong taste. This well rounded type of vape juice is a crowd pleaser and compatible with most vape kits. If you are brand new to vaping, we recommend you begin with a 50/50 e liquid. If you find that you want more cloud, a stronger flavour, or that the throat hit is too intense, you can move the VG up a bit - for example, the DK fruits selection has a VG of 70%. If you find you want more throat hit, and less cloud, you could select something with 70% PG instead, such as the Mish Mash Shortfall OMG.
What is 'Throat Hit'?
We have mentioned the term ‘throat hit’ a few times during this article. To clarify, we mean the sensation at the back of your throat when you inhale vapour. Some people like to recreate the same throat hit as cigarettes, which is why a higher PG vape would be more suited. Others want a smoother throat hit (or not to feel the vapour at all). The choice is yours. Throat hit is also influenced by nicotine strength. The higher the strength, the bolder the hit.
