A winter chill brings with it frosty winds, damp air, and an indoor dryness from increased central hearing. As the environment changes, our skin and hair quality does too. In fact, during winter, our blood vessels shrink in order to try and preserve heat, but this also stops nutrients and oxygen reaching the skin. The consequence is that our skin can look and feel more irritated, flakey, and generally unhappy.
Many skincare products exist out there - too many to try. But there has in recent years been an increased interest in CBD for skincare.
Common Skin Problems in Winter
Winter weather does two things to our skin. Firstly, it can create new problems that didn't exist in the summer months such as sudden dryness and chapped lips. Secondly, it can worsen pre-existing skin problems like eczema, hives and psoriasis.
Primarily this happens because the air is dryer and your body moisture depletes. Lips are particularly susceptible to this because of the thin membrane that covers that area. And the more you lick your lips to reduce dryness, the more sore and chapped they get.
Chilblains are also common in winter. Around 1 in 10 people get chilblains, with the symptoms being very sore blister-like bumps normally on hands and feet. These do disappear on their own but can be very uncomfortable for the 7-14 days they appear for.
Finally, a common skin problem in winter is cold sores. But this is less to do with the cold weather and more to do with the way our immune systems work in the winter. During these months, we tend to get more coughs and colds, and generally feel more run down. When our immunity is low, we are more susceptible to cold sores (little blisters that can appear in the corner of your mouth). The cold sores are caused by a normally-dormant virus called HSV-1.
Why Does CBD Work?
As already mentioned, there is no shortage in skincare options out there. Body scrubs, shampoos, cuticle creams, balms, lotions - this market is saturated. But CBD is a natural, healthy and evidence-based compound that can make all the difference to your skincare routine.
The human body contains a complex network of neurotransmitters. But we also have something called an endocannabinoid receptor system (ECS) which has cannabinoid receptors within it. These receptors bind with CBD and create a healing effect to that area of the body. Evidence so far has shown that receptors in the skin can aid CBD in its therapeutic effects against common skin complaints.
