5 Superfoods For The Skin

Skincare needn't be complicated. Nature provides us with everything we need to battle some common problems like acne, eczema and itchy scalp. Here are 5 superfoods you can incorporate into your diet or your skincare routine for better, brighter skin.

Oatmeal

There are two ways to use oatmeal to improve skin quality. You can eat it, or you can find skincare products that have oatmeal as a listed ingredient. Or, if you are feeling creative, you can even make your own oatmeal face mask! Firstly, when you eat oatmeal, you are indirectly nourishing your skin. Oatmeal is low on the glycemic index, (a scale that measures how much a carbohydrate increases blood sugar). Oatmeal provides a slow, steady blood sugar increase, rather than a huge spike and crash. The spike and crash can cause inflammation in the body which is associated with acne breakouts. So, a bowl of oatmeal instead of sugary cereal each day might really help.

When used topically, oatmeal is also very beneficial. Oatmeal contains beta-glucan, which is a substance that can absorb water, as well as phenols (antioxidants) and saponins (cleanser). A study has shown that oatmeal is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory when used on the skin directly, due to the chemical called avenanthramides. Another study shows that oatmeal is great for treating sunburn.

Oatmeal continues to be studied, but research indicates that oatmeal is worth a try if you experience any of the following skin complaints:

  • Dry, itchy face, body or scalp.
  • Dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Patchy pigmentation
  • Acne
  • Sunburn

Many skincare products contain oatmeal due to its known benefits to the skin. For example, the Voyager 400mg CBD Clarity Moisturiser combines oatmeal with other healing ingredients (shea butter, tea tree oil and sunflower seed extract) to give you glowing, healthy, problem-free skin.

Avocado

Avocados, much like oatmeal, can be beneficial for the skin when eaten and when used topically. Avocados are rich in vitamin E, vitamin C and are natural collagen boosters. One study has shown that avocados directly prevent the skin from ageing, improving elasticity due to their ability to produce collagen. You are advised to try avocado if you experience:

  • Dry skin
  • Wrinkled / aging skin
  • Thin looking / translucent complexion
  • Blotchy, discoloured skin
  • Itchiness

Avocado can be mashed up and applied directly to the skin. You can also mix it with other ingredients like honey to create a face mask. Or, you can buy a product that contains avocado. For example, you can buy a bath bomb that contains avocado oil and bathe it in, so that your entire body and face can benefit from this amazing ingredient.

Hemp / Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp is a plant belonging to the cannabis family. The seeds from hemp can be pressed into an oil, which has a fantastic effect on problem-skin. Hemp seed oil contains omega-6 which is a powerful anti-inflammatory. It also encourages skin cell growth and regeneration. Hemp seed oil can also help improve the effects of dermatitis, which has been demonstrated in one study testing the ingredient over 20 weeks. You should try and use hemp seed oil if you experience any of the following problems:

  • Acne / Spots
  • Dry skin
  • Eczema
  • Bacterial infections

Hemp seed oil can be found in many skincare products, including the Got Wellness Hemp 1000mg CBD Soap.

Hemp oil is very similar to CBD oil, which is oil extracted from a different part of the same plant. CBD is incredibly good for the skin, and can be used in a multitude of ways. You can take CBD as a capsule each day, or use it as a topical product to deal directly with a skin complaint. You can also use a CBD oil through a tincture, or vape it using a CBD e-liquid. CBD has been studied extensively and can help with dermatitis, acne, and many other skin problems.

Citrus Fruits

If you have oily, problematic skin prone to breakouts and soreness, you might need a good dose of citrus (lemons, oranges etc).

Eating citrus fruits mean you are bringing plenty of vitamin C into your diet, which directly enhances skin health from the inside out. By using a vitamin C face mask or moisturiser, you should be able to see a noticeable difference to your skin brightness in no time.

Turmeric

Turmeric has been used for thousands of years as a natural remedy for various health complaints, including skin conditions. It can be eaten, added to food, made into a shot drink, or taken as a capsule. It gets its health benefits from curcumin, a bioactive component with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The curcumin can help to heal wounds on the skin and reduce scarring and other visible abnormalities. So, if you have acne scarring, adding turmeric into your diet or applying it topically can really help. Furthermore, turmeric is a natural collagen booster, so will help to slow the visible signs of ageing.

You should try turmeric if you have any of the following problems:

  • Wrinkled / prematurely ageing skin
  • Scarring
  • Acne
  • Discolouration
  • Lack of elasticity

We recommend that you try some turmeric in your food, use it as a shot, or buy a topical turmeric product. It is very cheap to buy in most supermarkets and health stores.

Combine Your Products

As a top tip, it is best to try and combine some of these super food ingredients for even better skin. For example, you could find a moisturiser that incorporates CBD, turmeric and oatmeal. This way you get many benefits. Or use a body lotion enriched with both citrus fruits and hemp seed oil. The choice is yours. You should first identify your problem areas and then decide which super food supplement you want to use, and what it might be combined with for an even more potent effect.
